Palombella is one of the most looked forward to celebrations in Orvieto which draws people from all over the world. It takes place on Pentecost Sunday. Craft fairs and parades and a sacred rite take place to express thanks for good luck and in honour of the Holy Spirit. This festival has already been held for 6 centuries and the sacred ritual consists of putting fireworks around a cage with a dove inside then moving the cage down a wire as far as the cathedral steps. The couple most recently married are to be in charge of taking care of the dove, if it survives this ordeal.
From the last days of December until the first days of January the Umbria Jazz Festival is held. On New Year’s Eve the celebration is even bigger and more exciting. When the summer comes another jazz festival is held grown out of the great popularity that the winter festival has gained.
