In 1957 Gian Carlo Menotti started up a festival which was then called Festival dei Due Mondi. Today it is recognized worldwide as the Spoleto Festival which now has a sister festival in Charleston, South Carolina. The festival which takes place over three weeks from the last days in June to the first weeks in July has a huge variety and number of performances including opera, theatre, ballet, art exhibitions, film-screenings and fun recreations of the old court proceedings. The performances are put on in different parts of Spoleto such as the Rocca Albornoziana (Picture 1), the Roman theatre (Picture 3) and the cathedral (Picture 2) where the closing concert is held. By March there are never any tickets left for the best performances. However, there are usually some for the less known and no less enjoyable other performances. Some churches play host to other concerts which are free of charge. For further information and bookings see the following link www.spoletofestival.it or call 800 56 56 00.
